`It’s already 4:30 and I forgot that we have to eat dinner tonight – again!
I am aware of how absolutely absurd that sounds, but dinner – not breakfast or lunch so much (easily thrown together and I actually do make killer omelets - surprisingly) - is one of my biggest challenges as a wife and a mother. Fortunately, my husband wants us to live, and actually likes to cook; therefore, does most, if not all, the cooking.
I know, I know...please don’t hate me cuz my husband's beautiful -
Even though he cooks, I still have the desire to be the perfect little housewife who has dinner ready for her husband as he walks in the door from a long day at the office. And I’ve been known to have cooked a meal or two here and there in the history of our life together. But, on a daily basis, it’s just simply not in my make-up to think about “What’s for dinner tonight?” – EVERY night?!
Since I got married late in life (34), I did the take-out, salad bar at the grocery store, heat up a can of soup, or starvation thing throughout my 20’s. My poor mom tried to get me in the kitchen as I was growing up, but I guess I figured she’d always be there to feed me, and found talking on the phone much more interesting.
Since starting to live in the “real world”, I have been fascinated by other people’s dinner habits and by the fact that people cook! It baffles me how you know #1, what to get at the grocery store in order to #2 cook for the whole week without #3 having to run out to the grocery store for chicken broth because you already knew you would need it! I know I sound like a complete moron…and I understand the concept of meal planning and grocery lists etc. But as much as I’ve tried, the process is invariably confusing and difficult for me.
Thank God for having mercy on me and delivering me a man that cooks…and puts up with a wife doesn’t.

For most of my late teens/early 20s I lived on Tostitos and Salsa and Canned Peas...
My mother-in-law was a stay at home mom basically her ENTIRE LIFE (she doesn't even qualify for Social Security because she hasn't spent enough time 'working'?!). In any case, Ohio would come home to HUGE meals every night of the week.
When we moved in together, for our first dinner I made gnocchi. Ohio looked at me with wide innocent eyes and asked: "Gnocchi? Just gnocchi? Where's the salad with crumbled feta? Where's the meat product? Is there dessert?". Poor boy. At least there were no false pretenses when he asked me to marry him!
I know eventually I'll need to master what appears to be the HIGHLY complex art of cooking...if not for Ohio and myself then at least for Munchie...but in the meantime I'm not going down without a fight :)
Thank you for visiting my blog. I'm glad I found yours.
At least you ate your veggies! I think the only form of vegetables I had during my early 20's was the lettuce in the Taco Bell burritos...
That's so funny about your 1st dinner - I'm with you on the mother-in-law, stay-at-home cooking full meal thing. My husband's mom was a PERFECTIONIST and cooked gourmet meals etc. Our poor husbands.
We'll get there - maybe - maybe not. What I wouldn't do for a personal chef!
Tx Poppet,
I too am glad you found me! I will definitely be checking out your site regularly...love your picture:-)
It is so validating to hear this, considering my best friend is awesome at the once-a-month cooking thing and doesn't get my daily WHAT WILL WE EAT freakout.
I've had bouts of organized meal preparation & delivery, but they just never stick...
